My teaching methods have evolved over the last few years. This quote sticks to my soul. I learned this as a teacher by constantly telling children what to do but forgetting not to tell them why. You can say I learned this the hard way. Now that I have my own children I have perfected this quote and constantly see it in action.
I absolutely love this book! Day Care Days by Mary Brigid Barrett
It's a story about a modern day family of 4 who have their 2 children enrolled at a local daycare center. This book helps break down routines for children, from sun up to sun down. My two year old loves this book as well.
My favorite author is Karen Katz. Her books are for birth-preschool. As an Infant and Toddler teacher Karen Katz books were perfect for my age groups. The children loved the big bold illustrations and her books have an wide range of topics: Cultures, body parts, manners, holidays and so much more. If you have not read any of her books, your missing out! KarenKatz.com
I love your quote that you chose to share! When I was in middle school, I remember a teacher that had this in her room. I never understood why that quote was important or relevant. However, now that I am in the education field, I see the important of involving and teaching children every day! I also read the story of your sweet little girl Kennedy. I find it truly inspiring that you chose to turn the situation into a learning experience and realize how blessed you and your family are. I know I would have struggled in that situation. I wish the best for you and your family!

Your quote fits so well with my own teaching philosophy. I have always believed the more you can put in our children's hands the better they will learn. I know there are times for what I call "sit and get," but I so believe that if children are hands on they will learn so much better. They also enjoy the learning much more often, not even realizing they are learning.
ReplyDeleteI grew up hearing this quote, but it was further highlighted as I studied for my Bachelors Degree and the constructivist theories became real. Its so amazing how the human brain works! Great quote that I will add to my classroom wall come September!
